“The Enlightened view XM as a gift. Destiny. A way for Humanity to reach a new state of being through its mind-enhancing properties. They desire to EVOLVE humanity.”

“The Resistance view XM with caution. A potential threat of unknown origin. Something of mysterious intent that must be controlled and studied. They desire to PROTECT humanity.”

At the start of 2026, Beijing Resistance and Beijing Enlightened each published a grand essay.

One was by Shanghai Resistance Agent @Luvletter: 'Ingress After 13 Years: An Evergreen Pioneer, or a Crumbling Utopia?' 》 (the 'blue essay' below).

The other was by @Gibbses, formerly a Shandong Enlightened Agent, now in Japan: 'ENL Community Giveaway: Ito En Tenth-Anniversary Redemption Code Raffle' (the 'green essay' below).

First, let AI speak for me. After reading both essays in full, read the following AI summaries critically—all of this is the AI's interpretation, with a tiny bit of human correction.

The green essay's central argument—

Ingress's value lies not in individual victories or rewards, but in community connections and emotions sustained together.

Through his experience winning in the Ito En × Ingress tenth-anniversary campaign, the author explains his decision to share the redemption code with the ENL community, stressing that 'Ingress has never been a one-person game' and that every player's actions rest on an order built collectively by countless people.

For the author, ten years of playing is not simply a point in time but a form of 'continuation': continuing trust in the game, commitment to the community, and the willingness to keep acting. This continuation means more than the individual prize itself.

The Green Essay's Writing Style

Emotional narrative: first-person interior monologue, with frequent emotional expressions such as 'I really froze' and 'my heart still gave a little tremor', creates an authentic sense of personal experience.

Fragmented structure: short sentences, dashes, and blank space, such as 'That wasn't “drinking water”, but “continuing”', create rhythm and pauses for thought suited to WeChat public-account reading habits.

Poetic language: parallel phrases in the title and ending ('Ten years of green tea, ten years of XM'; 'The green has not faded; the fragrance of tea remains') and metaphors ('a bottle of green tea, and the entrance to a world') heighten the literary quality and emotional appeal.

An appeal to community belonging: second-person phrases such as 'You're still here, right?' and 'So you're still here too' build emotional resonance with readers, particularly ENL players, and strengthen community identity.

The blue essay's central argument—

Ingress's three pillars are losing balance, sliding from 'evergreen pioneer' toward 'crumbling utopia'.

The once-virtuous cycle built on the three pillars of 'map (POIs/inaccessible Portals)–item economy–community/faction competition' is being disrupted by:

1. 'Long-term loss of gameplay vitality' caused by inaccessible Portals, imbalanced stats and server design, and extreme resource inequality.

2. Cheating accounts and clusters of fake Portals severely damaging the game environment.

3. Faction and clique divisions transforming community and faction structures from 'the fun of competition' into 'toxic socializing'.

These problems break the intended virtuous cycle at multiple points; many areas instead enter a 'negative feedback' loop, making play harder for the weaker faction and making newcomers more likely to quit.

The conclusion: Ingress currently resembles an unbalanced utopian experiment. It has the potential to become a lifetime game, but under its current technology, design, and community ecology it is clearly declining, while the developer lacks the ability and willingness to repair it.

The Blue Essay's Writing Style

1. A long technical analysis from an engineer's perspective: extensive technical terminology and engineering language, paired with numerical estimates—total XM, Cube output, Hack counts, time spans—uses calculations to 'prove' cheating and imbalance. Highly persuasive to insiders, but with something of an entry barrier for newcomers.

2. A clear structure that critiques by dismantling modules chapter by chapter: beginning with a theoretical model of the virtuous cycle, then three main sections, and finally returning to the title question with a conclusion.

3. Language: rational grumbling + insider slang + measured emotion.

The emotional register is 'resigned but not entirely hopeless'. Many passages carry veteran players' characteristic fatigue and sarcasm: 'Niantic's left and right brains fighting each other', 'ungodly hours', 'black holes', 'airdrop map control', 'a 1w inventory + an L8 farm spoofer', and 'emotional damage' keep the serious analysis readable and entertaining.

I call them grand essays mainly because each reaches an extreme peak in certain respects.

One engages with the world; the other transcends it. Opposite extremes.

Admittedly, comparing an emotional giveaway post with a rational critique is a somewhat unfair task.

Personally, however, I think this is precisely an extreme expression of faction personality. After all, neither essay could have been written by just any random blue or green Agent.

Whether you're blue or green, pause silently for 10 seconds and ask your conscience: how do you feel?

Does the green essay's emotional expression uplift you, or does the blue essay's rational critique leave you powerless?

Extending this further brings us to this article's question: Are Resistance personalities more rational, and Enlightened personalities more emotional?

You may say that one person's single essay cannot characterize an entire faction. 'Can one spot reveal the whole leopard?'

But think back to when each of us opened that selection screen and looked at the blue and green buttons and their descriptions.

Looking back at the faction descriptions, it all seems entirely natural:

“The Enlightened view XM as a gift. Destiny. A way for Humanity to reach a new state of being through its mind-enhancing properties. They desire to EVOLVE humanity.”

“The Resistance view XM with caution. A potential threat of unknown origin. Something of mysterious intent that must be controlled and studied. They desire to PROTECT humanity.”

Chinese

AI translation

The Enlightened consider XM a gift and a matter of destiny. Through this exotic matter's power to enhance the human mind, humanity may reach an entirely new state of being. Their goal is for humanity to evolve .

The Resistance, by contrast, remain wary of XM, seeing it as a force of unknown origin and potentially dangerous intent that must be closely controlled and studied. Their goal is to protect humanity from being controlled by XM.

Leaving aside exceptions such as 'I just like blue/green', 'my partner is blue/green', or 'my finger slipped', everyone considered the differences to some extent before pressing that button and making their choice.

To me, these two essays are perfect footnotes to the personalities of the two factions.

Each faction's publicity language also reflects its audience's leanings. After all, why write something your own faction would condemn?

Individual choices may involve error, but statistical probabilities really can tell us something.

I consider myself fairly well read in both blue and green writing. (I've even done something as foolish as annotating Green Onion Daily sentence by sentence. )

Looking back, based purely on impressions:

Green writing tends toward emotional expression and venting, mainly at the blue faction, with little fact-based self-reflection or questioning (if you have counterexamples, please share them). )

Blue writing tends toward rational analysis and factual exposition, more often reacting to the other side's emotions and accusations. (Counterexamples welcome here too. )

Those impressions showed up in the recent 'expired certificate prevents login' incident like this:

Enlightened:
This is a report from Agents on the front line.Since the Scanner malfunctioned at 3:46 this afternoon, all contact with NIA command has been lost.No orders, no updates, no verifiable official signal of any kind.To us, this is more than a technical failure: it is silence across the XM network.Agents’ temporary responseWithout NIA coordination, Agents in different areas have developed their own responses. Some Scanners have been confirmed to reconnect temporarily through time-synchronization adjustments.Agents are sharing updates to avoid unnecessary logouts.Maintaining XM operations and mission status with the least possible risk.We can cope, but this should not be normal. The missing NIAWe need a clear explanation of the situation—a signal from NIA showing that the chain of command still exists.Even if it is just: “We are working on it.”Waiting to reconnectXM is still flowing, and Portals are still responding.Agents remain online, but NIA is out of contact. We have held the front line and found ways to survive for now.All we can do is wait for NIA to restore contact and get the whole XM network back on track.Agent report complete. Remaining on standby.

Resistance:

Hello, Agents. This is your war correspondent, still holding the front line of Ingress. If anything could send Ingress players worldwide into a collective meltdown over Christmas in 2025, it would not be an infestation of red Machina Portals or pricier fries. It would be this: the ape—Niantic—actually forgot to renew its server certificate!Yes, you heard that right. This high-tech company, which claims to be building the “Real World Metaverse,” apparently cannot even afford a few hundred yuan a year for an SSL certificate after splitting off as Niantic Spatial.NIANTIC SPATIALSSL Certificate EXPIRED

SummaryThis incident has once again shown that:1. The ape—Niantic—is still the same amateur outfit we know so well, even under the name Niantic Spatial.2. Ingress players can overcome any technical obstacle to keep their streak alive.3. Do not count on Niantic’s operations team at Christmas.Compensation? Wash up and go to bed, everyone. You can have anything in your dreams.Sorry.

You may think I'm taking isolated cases as representative and imposing stereotypes on a whole group.

But if you've played long enough and seen enough players and events, perhaps you'll agree with my observation.

I'm not arguing here about whether reason or emotion is better, only whether these leanings have some faint correlation with faction.

Personally, I think they do.

What do you think?

To conclude—

Your faction choice is more than a button in a game: it is your instinctive answer to 'How should humanity confront an unknown power?'

You made that choice long ago. What remains is to understand the choice you made.

P.s.

As for Resistance Agents pointing out that—

the Ito En × Ingress campaign rules clearly stated, 'Codes won may only be redeemed by the winner and may not be transferred', yet @Gibbses used his code for community engagement through a long lyrical essay, even openly posting it on a public account—

my only personal reading is— Why care about rules? I'll play however I want to.

Somehow, that 'forget the rules, as long as we're happy' attitude explains quite a lot of other things too.

I won't expand on that here. Fill in the blanks yourselves.
