At last, this argument over OPR is coming to an end.

Today, people suddenly noticed that many of the accounts unbanned on April 18 no longer had the “RECON” Portal-review medal on their Profiles.

Here is a brief timeline of the whole “AI Portal-review cheating” affair:

  • November 2025: When NIA split up, the old Wayfarer Portal-nomination system was sold off together with Pokémon GO, and the newly separated NIASpatial announced the return of OPR (Operation Portal Recon). Players were delighted and ready to keep contributing to the Portal network. What none of us imagined then was that the cheats doing automated AI reviews had already, at some unknown point, typed their first line of code.

  • February 2026: NIASpatial quietly released an update that publicly displayed the exact timestamps at which players earned each medal tier. People spotted obvious irregularities in these figures; more than 40 people checked over 800 account Profiles overnight and compiled a list of 28 accounts involved in OPR cheating. The report “For Whom the Bell Tolls” was published, and the findings were submitted to NIASpatial.

  • March 11, 2026: NIASpatial officially suspended OPR and all new Portal nominations, saying it needed to “realign” its technology stack.

  • March 18, 2026: NIASpatial came down hard. More than 50 offending accounts in China were served a 31-day ban. Still more players worldwide were affected.

  • April 18, 2026: The 31 days of “confinement” ended. The banned players came back online.

  • May 2026: Those players who had been banned for 31 days had their RECON medals confiscated outright. Although we cannot be 100 percent certain that the removal is permanent, it sends an unmistakably strong signal. These people were banned for their OPR misconduct, and their RECON medals were taken away as punishment.

Honestly, given Niantic’s usual pace, resolving this in just a few months is already lightning fast.

These months of attacks, argument, bad-faith impersonation, and whitewashing may finally be drawing to a close.

Looking back on all of it, I stand by what I said: “Own up when you are wrong, and stand straight when you take the consequences.”

To those independent media outlets—a certain paper, a certain network of public accounts—and the cowards hiding behind them, shouting threats,

I sincerely hope you recover your consciences, play honestly, and reject cheating.

If you remain stubbornly unrepentant, we can only stay the course and keep watching you until the day the servers shut down.

For now, I only hope NIAS restores OPR nominations as soon as possible, improves the review process, and prevents this from happening again.

My sincere thanks to everyone in the community who kept following this and helped share the story.

Let us protect fairness and justice across this Portal network together.
