Chapter / 2

Chapter / 3

TARCADIA

Cool

Emmm……

Chapter / 4

M Stand

Chapter / FIN

Prologue

He once said: Time flies very~fast. (Several lines omitted. If you know, you know.

It had been at least five years since my last visit to Shanghai. Even subtracting those three years we all know about, it had still been at least two.

Four days this time—what to do besides meetings? Maybe take the electric skateboard. Walking is too tiring.

—So thought Xy before departure.

Chapter 1 / Back After Ten Years

If Shanghai had been at least five years, Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Minhang campus had been exactly ten.

Why do I remember the timing so clearly?

Because ten years ago, I attempted a triple leap—across universities, regions, and disciplines—to enter a niche graduate program at Jiao Tong.

My first-round score was decent, but I failed the second round, so that was that.

One thing unchanged over those ten years: my admiration for Jiao Tong's choice of location.

How did they choose somewhere more than 20 kilometers from the old campus back in the eighties?

It truly deserves the pun 'Shanghai Foot-Ache University'.

Medal Earned: Discoverie.
Successfully unlocked a medal at Jiao Tong.

Chapter / 2 Tongji Is a Good University

After Thursday's quick look around Jiao Tong, Friday was the planned full day of meetings at Tongji. I found time for the cherry-blossom Missions. Lovely.

Clearly, it wasn't cherry-blossom season. Instead, the scent of osmanthus filled the air everywhere~
Pale Cherry Blossoms (薄櫻)
Dim lights, osmanthus in the air.

Students exercising all over the sports ground. A lovely atmosphere.

Tongji is a good university (so are Jiao Tong and Fudan).

The one catch: the electric skateboard wasn't much use at Tongji.

Too much stone paving; riding felt like turning on vibration mode.
Postgraduate entrance-exam tutoring for Tongji's flagship programsArchitecture; urban planning; design; landscape architecture.Design: environmental design, industrial design and graphic design.
This sign also left me deeply wistful. Who could have imagined that architecture, so dominant 15 years ago, would become the reluctant fallback for students reassigned to a different major today? Tianjin and Tongji—both TJU, both among the original four great architecture schools—really are brothers in misfortune.

That night, I took another walk around the Bund. For some reason, it felt much less crowded than five years ago.

Chapter / 3 An Encounter with a Mysterious Organization

Saturday morning began at Fudan's Handan Road campus, even smaller than Tongji's. I finished the last Mission in the row above.
Yang's Dumplings
Lunch at Yang's Dumplings in Wujiaochang. Not bad. The three of us simply ordered too much. A little overstuffed.

After seeing the boss off at noon, the afternoon officially became solo time. Lujiazui—Mission time!
Shanghai
A row of Lujiazui Financial Center Missions.

Lujiazui really does have a lot of people, and getting around really isn't convenient.

The sidewalks were unpleasant to skate on, and I didn't dare use the road, did I? (I did later. Practice really does make perfect.)

By 4:50 I'd completed only 3 of the Missions above. Then I remembered the dinner I'd arranged with Shanghai Resistance. Couldn't be late. So I wrapped up quickly and went to eat.
Asahi Super Dry.TARCADIA
Ochazuke, wasabi octopus, grilled eel, grilled chicken skin, and~~Super Dry.

Thanks to @Dongyunlong, @Tarcadia, and @MaiSaionji for hosting me.

They even joined me afterward for an MD Mission in People's Park.

@Tarcadia's card lights up. Seriously cool.

It was already seven after the Japanese meal; @Tarcadia gave me a lift back to Lujiazui on his way, and I prepared to continue the Missions.

I unloaded the electric skateboard and started, but traffic police lined the route. Remembering veteran @Luvletter's advice, I felt a little guilty and nervous.
Watch out for the traffic police in Shanghai; they've been going hard on revenue collection lately.
So I followed delivery riders' routes, twisting and turning, looking for a way to the next Mission stop without passing the traffic police.

But what I never expected was that, while avoiding the police,

I'd run into a group of fellow skateboarders out cruising, who were also avoiding them!

Fellow skaters adrift in the world—who needs a prior introduction?

I immediately abandoned the Missions and joined the street-cruising crew.
TEAM
Honestly, I envy Shanghai's skaters: they even have this stretch of dedicated cycle path beside the Huangpu River.

A gentle evening breeze. Wonderful skating. The security guards didn't give us trouble either.

At the end of the cycle path, a group photo.
East Bank
Seeing no Portal here, naturally, as an Agent, I had to submit one.
Start of the cycle pathShanghai (31.254568,121.545249).IN QUEUE; nominated on 2023-10-21.START, 0 kilometers.Description: the zero-kilometer starting point, beneath Yangpu Bridge.Location: Ningguo Road (South), Inner Ring Viaduct, Yangpu Bridge, Huangpu River.
Then hotpot with the skaters. Tasty, but I could barely eat any more. (It was my fourth meal, after all.

Streets cruised, dinner eaten. But it was only ten. Nothing to do back at the hotel.

And only 4 Missions done—not even a row. My completionist itch couldn't take it.

So I said goodbye to the skaters, turned back to Lujiazui, and kept doing Missions!

At half past ten, Lujiazui was much quieter. By the time the last two Missions were done, it was eleven, and I had to work out how to get back to the hotel.

I'd booked in Xujiahui to make the next day's Missions easier.

The map said 500 meters to the metro station, with less than 10 minutes until the last Line 2 train.

Possible, but a close call.

Whatever. Commando-tourist mode on.

Onto the electric skateboard, against the traffic down the street.

The fastest route wasn't the sidewalk or the footbridge.

It was straight down the motor-vehicle lane, the wrong way.

Fortunately, almost nobody was around then. I raced back to the circular footbridge at Lujiazui metro station.

Only to find there was simply nowhere to walk in with any dignity.

(All car lanes, after all. They never designed this area for pedestrians to reach, okay?
TACO BELL
No choice: over the railing, sprint, reach security at the last moment.

The machine was already off; the security guy waved me straight through.

And that was how I caught the last metro back to Puxi.

Ummm... thrilling. Very thrilling.

BTW, while changing trains at People's Park, I met a rat.

Nimble little thing. It finally ducked into DQ. LOL.

Chapter / 4 Intestine Noodles and a Mahjong Latte?

Asleep at one, but awake again at six thirty. Out at seven thirty for more Missions.

I have to say, this Xuhui row was very skateboard-friendly.

An hour and a half, and a whole row secured.
Shanghai
Xujiahui Park, Xinhua Road, Wukang Mansion, Jiao Tong's Xuhui campus, Grand Gateway, and Xujiahui Catholic Cathedral.

First stop was the cathedral. It was Sunday; Mass was probably underway inside.

I worked up the nerve to enter. A lady called from a distance, 'Are you a parishioner?'

I said no; she said, 'Then please leave.' I apologized awkwardly and backed out.

Luckily, a path beside the church let me just barely reach the Portal. That saved me from getting stranded halfway through the Mission.

That made half of Shanghai Mission Day 2016 complete. The other half can wait for next time.

At ten, off to Pudong. Line 7 all the way to the end. Another two rows of Harry Potter Missions in an hour. Oh yeah!

There's an identical set in Beijing's Wangjing, but the map made this Shanghai version look easier.

I'll ask veteran @Areskyo for the source materials and make one in Tianjin too!
New arrivals
A picture that looks odd however you view it. My mind keeps replaying, 'You came here to take a sh*t, didn't you~'

Back to the hotel at noon to check out, then more wandering.

Realizing I hadn't eaten since waking, I found a nearby bowl of pork-intestine noodles.

The taste was acceptable. The soup on the side was actually very good.

After the noodles, I passed an M Stand and ordered the much-talked-about 'mahjong latte'.
M Stand
Honestly, not bad. Just a faint sesame-paste flavor, not very pronounced.

Five p.m., Hongqiao Railway Station: aboard the high-speed train home.

Trip over.

Chapter / FIN It Really Is the Benchmark

I've heard Shanghai called the benchmark for urban management in China.

Four days of wandering convinced me it was true.

Both are centrally administered municipalities, yet the differences are visible everywhere.

Clean streets, fresh air, refined buildings.

I passed 3 traffic police officers on the electric skateboard without being stopped.

Park security simply said I couldn't take it inside, and agreed to look after it for me.

Tongji needs no reservation; just scan your ID card. Fudan and Jiao Tong let you in with a WeChat reservation.

Yep. I'll be back.

With a double-kick skateboard.

I want the pump track.

I want the skate park!

Chapter/2

Chapter/3

TARCADIA

@Dongyunlong、@Tarcadia、@MaiSaionji、

LOL。

Chapter/4

M Stand

Chapter/FIN
