周末两天的舟车劳顿;
三五场间歇性的猛戳手机与街头暴走;
游戏内三五个虚拟的数值增长(+1);
认认真真吃几顿好饭,感受地道的天津市井烟火气;
体验精心设计、绝对不坑的线路任务,不为刷数据而走,只为风景而留;
拿限定的实体周边,在百年的历史教堂前,和志同道合的朋友们一起合影留念;
一边是花费数千、在服务器崩溃中埋头点 Po 的红眼急行军;
This weekend, the Orion Anomalies in Sydney and Prague came to a close.
Yet what Agents will remember is not a thrilling contest, but four hours of 'disaster and torment' battling a total server outage.
Resonators were unresponsive; actions kept timing out. Countless Agents spent serious money on flights and hotels, arriving full of anticipation for this official in-person competition, only to find that their greatest enemies were not the opposing faction but potato servers failing at the crucial moment and Niantic Spatial's hollow promises to the community.
After this deeply disappointing operational fiasco, organizations including @RGNNticker, @worldingressresistanceradio, and @EGR_ticker spoke out, condemning NIAS and demanding that this never happen again.
But the problem may go beyond NIAS's server capacity.
A more important question is whether this XMA format, now more than a decade old, is long overdue for change.
01 An Actual Offline Gang Fight
'Numbers are king. More people means victory.' 'XX is faction X's home turf. Faction Y is bound to lose there.'
Today's Anomalies look a lot like livestreaming-platform popularity battles—or old Beijing gang fights, where first you assemble a crowd.
To win, both factions can only push raw headcounts and spending.
A competition whose outcome can be determined simply by the number of active players in and around the host city is profoundly unfair to the local minority faction.
Ground team : 'However hard I grind, spend, execute, or maneuver, I can't erase their overwhelming numerical advantage. Forget it. I'll just go through the motions.'
The so-called leadership : 'Since we're likely to lose in XX, let's move our budget and strength to YY and ZZ, where we're favored or evenly matched—a bit of Tian Ji's horse-racing strategy.'
If a competition has run for more than a decade and its main yardstick is still headcount, doing nothing to motivate either side to improve its technical or tactical skills, with recruitment the only way to improve the odds, how much competitive meaning does the game still have?
02 An Expensive Game of Chinese Chess Where the Horses Can Fly
If XMA is a game of Chinese chess, here is where we stand: The venue keeps changing, but after more than a decade we're still replaying the most basic opening moves: 'Cannon two to file five; horse eight advances to seven.'
More absurdly, the more numerous side can even 'enchant' its pieces:
Cannon two to file five (and increase the cannon's attack range while you're at it)
Horse eight advances to seven (this is a special international horse: it can trot in a straight line, and even fly)
This game was unfair from the start. Your horse can fly—have you considered how the other horse feels?
And this unfair game is extremely expensive.
03 Thousands of Yuan for a '48-Hour Forced March'—What Do You Get?
For anyone other than local players, attending an XMA abroad or in another city means
flights, hotels, food, and drinks adding up to at least 2,000 yuan, perhaps 5,000, with no upper limit (all in RMB).
So after spending real money and your free weekend, what do you get in return?
Two days of exhausting travel;
A few bouts of frantically tapping your phone and speed-walking through the streets;
A few in-game virtual numbers ticking up (+1);
One or two rushed local meals together and dozens or hundreds of Biocards.
Does that count as a relaxing weekend getaway?
It does not.
You've merely changed cities, keeping your head down tapping Portals, buying water at one convenience store after another between bouts of speed-walking,
leaving traces on a virtual Portal network that, in most cases, will last only a week.
You have no time to properly see this unfamiliar city before your red-eye flight is calling, and you must board and leave right on schedule.
Some people may be able to add three or five days of independent travel before or after the XMA. But probably not most.
'Speaking as the author, @Xyinkl, after attending three XMAs—Kobe, Japan; Bangkok, Thailand; and Macau, China—the marginal return on this experience is now close to zero.'
That may also explain why the GR events cancelled this season for insufficient registrations could already be a sign of players voting with their feet.
04 Back to Why We Started: Tianjin notMD Might Be Another Choice
In a recent poll about coming to Tianjin's notMD (an unofficial Mission Day), quite a few people chose 'I need the count; if it doesn't count, I'm not coming.'
But let's pause and think: Is that virtual MD+1 medal really so important?
Instead of spending thousands to go abroad for a game of 'Chinese chess with flying horses', you can now visit Tianjin, northern China's second city, on a budget of just three to five hundred yuan at most:
Take your time over a few good meals , and feel the warmth of everyday Tianjin life;
Experience thoughtfully designed Mission routes that won't mess you around , walking for the scenery rather than to grind stats;
Pick up limited-edition physical merchandise , and take photos with like-minded friends in front of a century-old church;
Really see a city you may have visited before but never properly lingered in.
On one side: thousands spent on a red-eye forced march, head down tapping Portals while the servers crash.
On the other: a few hundred for a leisurely city trip, walking among historic buildings and enjoying good food.
Which reflects why we started? Which is worth stopping for?
Perhaps NIAS should also reflect: after more than a decade of running XMAs,
with a storyline that barely updates, actors dismissed, and a format reduced to gathering headcounts,
beyond using AI each quarter to draw a few character medals and cash in,
what else—
what can it offer
these long-time players—
that's new?
And back to the players themselves:
It's 2026. Do you still have the stamina to grind?
Are you still willing to pay four figures out of pocket
to be somebody else's chess piece, tapping away at your phone?
Here in 2026,
faced with an XMA routine unchanged for more than a decade,
it's time to look away from that virtual '+1'
and rediscover the original joy of games and travel.
